Two Generations Of Betrayal

I stepped into adulthood just as Ronald Reagan was being sworn into office. The generation before me, at least the whites, had been the beneficiaries of generous New Deal economic policy and a rapidly expanding economy.

They got houses, and educations and unions that kept their wages high; they got a sense of economic fairness and security, which probably, in turn, gave them a sense of cohesion and confidence in their government.

They voted to end all that for their children. They voted to end the economic thinking that had so benefited them, when it came to their children and grandchild. Not all of them, but enough. And some supporters of these policies, like Paul Ryan, may not be age members of the Boomer generation, but they are definitely philosophically Boomers.
